Universal Laws from a Gospel View

I was listening to a meditation a friend sent me and the kind, gentle voice commentating said, “You do not need to rely on a higher power, just yourself and your thoughts.”  Being a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and a religious person, I wasn’t okay with that statement.

See, I believe that I have a Heavenly Father to help me and bless me on this mortal journey.  I am not always reliable with my thoughts and feelings. Sometimes I don’t feel happy. Sometimes I feel resentful, overwhelmed or sad.  I like knowing that I am not alone as I discover how to change those feelings to happiness, joy and peace. I like knowing there is someone on my side to help me; because I am mortal.

I’ve read tons of books and been to a lot of trainings that talk about mindset.  This field of study has its own unique language. We use words like “the universe” and “higher power.”  Sometimes it sounds mysteries and whimsical, but that’s okay 🙂

I have also spent tons of time in the scriptures and studying church leaders, looking for how mindset fits into my religious beliefs.  And the good news is… it’s everywhere and it’s amazing!! You just need to have the desire to want to see it and hear it, and you’ll start finding it.

Some people say, “ask the universe for what you want,”  or the “universe is kind and loving and only does what you ask it to” and I think that’s good. But I don’t worship “the universe…”

I worship Heavenly Father!  I believe that Heavenly Father created this universe for me/you, because He loves me/you.  He created the “universal laws” that I read about in mindset books, and He created them to work in MY favor.  If I work the system He created, then I can choose joy each and every day! And get help doing it.

So even when I’m “asking the universe for…,” in that same act, I am thanking my Heavenly Father for giving me the opportunity to make choices and using my agency to ask the universe for exactly what I want.  Plus, I can expect that in due time it will be delivered to me; because the system is set up to deliver what I ask for.

I believe that I am a daughter of God and that I am so very loved (so are you).  I believe that Heavenly Father knows exactly WHAT I am also-a beautiful, intelligent vibrating mass of energy.  An electromagnetic system, full of biological systems and chemical reactions. My brain is the most sophisticated supercomputer in the universe.  Modern science might be able to prove all this true, but who’s known this for centuries?

Heavenly Father! and He has been teaching me/us how to use our chemical reactions, electromagnetic systems, and supercomputers to create JOY in this life.  In fact, He loves us so much that He’s allowing us to discover all these scientific things about ourselves, because He trusts us to do good with what we learn. Wow-I feel very loved to be trusted with so much!

So how does mindset fit into the plan of salvation…  I could go into great detail here, but I’ll try and keep it simple.  We believe that we had a life before coming to this earth. We call that our premortal life.  We gathered with friends and family to a meeting, where a plan of joy was presented to us. There were two opposing arguments.  One gave us the ability to choose and the other one did not. Because I am a mortal being on this earth, I know I choose to have “choice” as part of my mortal experience.  Even in heaven I used my mind to choose.

During this life, I use my agency to choose what experiences I want to have here and what I am going to think about my circumstances.  My thoughts cause me to having feelings, which then cause me to act and certain way. If I have good, happy thoughts I feel good and I act in a way that helps me feel confident, kind and loving.  If I choose fearful, unkind thoughts I feel bad and I act in a way that is unhappy. My brain (supercomputer) gathers all these experiences together to give me evidence of how my life is. If I am happy and good, I have lots of evidence of happy, good times.  If I am sad and upset, I have lots of evidence of sad, bothersome times.

The universe was created as a tool for me to use.  If I learn to manage my supercomputer (brain) in a good way, I send out positive signals, the universe reads these signals and delivers good things to me.  If I don’t learn to manage my supercomputer the universe is going to get mixed signals and deliver me sporadic, unintentional results (some good, some bad).  Simply put, the universe does what I ask it to do (good or bad, whether I know what I’m doing or not). It follows laws.

So, my job is to learn the universal laws, so I can use them in favor of good things; to serve others and choose joy in my life.  I also need to learn how to manage my amazing supercomputer (and all the body functions it controls) so I can tell the universe what I want through it.  All the while, I am grateful to my Heavenly Father for setting these incredible systems up for me and teaching me how to use them through scriptures, modern day prophets, and inspiring people throughout the world.

Yes, there is an element of faith and aligning with Heavenly Father’s will here, but that is another topic for another time.  Ponder it if you wish 🙂

I’ve also been taught that, the things I learn on this planet I can take with me when I die.  Eventually, we will be resurrected and live in the state we have chosen, based upon our lives on this earth.  Knowing there is a eternal, joyful end (or new beginning) helps motivate me to keep choosing joy, to use my supercomputer and the universe to bless others lives.

Knowing the beginning and the end, gives purpose to the mind work in the beginning, on earth, and afterward.  So while some may say, “you only need to rely on yourself,” I think there is a more beautiful way.  I like knowing that I am not alone and I can also rely on help.  Although there is much to be done on our part, I like knowing there is an element of faith and magic in this.

This is my view of how mindset principles and universal laws fit into my beliefs as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.  I have talked with many people with various beliefs about how the “gospel” fits with “universal laws and mindset.” Many have been grateful for my point of view.  Learning about mindset principles actually increased my testimony of the gospel. I hope it does for you also.
